Abstract
The short summary of the works on the problem in research is presented. The experimental mean and specific effective scattering surfaces are determined for extreme range distances of detecting reflections from the sea surface at different cm-wave propagation conditions. The main attention was given to the over horizon area. Dependence between “illuminated” area and detection range of above water objects was defined for the over horizon radar. The conclusion that reflections from the sea surface may be used for on-line diagnostics of cm-wave propagation in the over horizon area was drawn.

KEY WORDS:evaporation duct, attenuation factor, effective scattering surface
