Abstract
The present paper gives an outline of classified results obtained at a Specialized Acoustic Laboratory (SAL) under the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The aim of the study is to get an appropriate insight into the physical nature of the sound timbre phenomenon of old-time “italian” violins. A unique method for the formant analysis of spectrum-complicated signals of wide-range oscillatory systems is proposed. A holographic technique was used to set up oscillation modes in the bodies of a violin or a viola with tightened strings. The physical properties of the “italian” tone quality of Cremona violins have been revealed and formulated and a basic reference standard (BRS) of this particular sound timber has been developed. The research data have been generalized to a broad class of oscillatory systems and passed a professional evaluation test.
